The Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), created in 1958 and federalized in 1960, emerged as the main institution of higher education in the state of Rio Grande do Norte through the merging of existing colleges and higher education schools in Natal, such as: Faculty of Pharmacy and Dentistry, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine and School of Engineering, among others.

Considered sometimes as the best university in the north/northeast of the country, UFRN is seen as a reference university in several areas. The institution has a land area of approximately 123 hectares which houses a multi-sport park with Olympic swimming pools, Olympic gymnasium, soccer fields and even athletics track. In addition to its various classrooms, laboratories and libraries, the Campus has an open-air amphitheater and a Social Center with a restaurant, a pharmacy, bank branches, a dedicated post office, bookstores and its own art gallery.

With such a large area, the university has an exclusive urban transportation system for the Campus and transport connections off the Campus as well.
